David Rutley, the British Minister for the Americas, Caribbean and Overseas Territories, is in Guyana meeting with president Dr. Irfaan Ali and senior government and military officials as he seeks to reaffirm the UK's support for Guyana's territorial integrity.
Mr. Rutley said the border issue with Venezuela has been settled for more than 120 years and sovereign borders must be respected.
He welcomed the recent agreement by Venezuela at last Thursday's meeting in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to refrain from the use of force and any further escalation over the Essequibo region.
Mr. Rutley said the UK will continue to work with partners in the region, as well as through international bodies, to ensure the territorial integrity of Guyana is upheld.
