UN seeking $29.2 million for St. Vincent relief

The United Nations on Tuesday announced it is seeking $29.2 million to help St. Vincent recover from volcanic eruptions.

The eruptions have destroyed homes and crops, contaminated water supplies and displaced at least 20 per cent of the population.

Didier Trebucq, U.N. resident coordinator for Barbados and the eastern Caribbean, said more money will be needed once damage assessments are completed.

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said officials are still quantifying the damage.

He said rebuilding will run in the hundreds of millions of dollars on top of massive humanitarian relief needs.

Jamaica and a number of CARICOM states including Trinidad and Tobago, as well as key regional institutions have committed to provide help.

The volcano erupted on April 9 forcing the evacuation of more than 16,000 people.
