UTECH President defends leadership

President of  the University of  Technology (UTECH), Professor Errol Morrison is speaking out about the recent issues at the institution which placed him and the management team in the spotlight.

The findings of  a special advisory committee set up to probe the conflict between the staff and management of UTECH corroborated much of  the union’s claims about poor management.
The advisory committee report pointed out that there was no approval to hire more than half  of  the people who work at the university.

The report also noted issues with the President's contract which it said was designed and not discussed with the appropriate persons regarding the content and duration.
According to Morrison said the findings are one sided and baseless and the entire disagreement stems from his continued efforts to make improvements at the university.

“There has been a growing concern I think, based on the fact that a number of new appointments have been coming in. We have a problem at UTECH in that the percentage of persons qualified to teach in University setting , they need to have what you call a terminal degree. Only 30% at this time have that, while in every international recognized institution you at at least 70-80%

He said efforts were made to improve the teachers' qualifications by funding their overseas training, but that method failed as some candidates did not return and other methods of  teacher improvements had to be explored.

His contract expires in February next year, but he says despite the disagreement, UTECH’s expansion under his watch is a part of  his record which speaks for itself.
“Depending on what the council says I will comply with that, but I will put this under the record, that it is not the same institution that it was seven years ago….. “ he said.
