The Jamaica Public Service Company reported on Tuesday that vandals destroyed several transformers that were scheduled for installation to support electricity restoration works in Westmoreland.
According to the light & power company, as part of preparatory work, the transformers were left overnight at a church property in the parish in order to begin restoration the following morning.
It said when JPS teams returned to begin installation, they discovered that the units had been disassembled and copper components removed from their interiors.
The energy company noted that the actions not only damaged critical infrastructure but also slowed the restoration process and prolonged the inconvenience experienced by customers awaiting electricity supply.
JPS is urging members of the public to help protect electricity infrastructure by reporting suspicious activity, and is appealing to anyone with information related to the incident to make an official report to the nearest police station.
