Vaz: Grassroots campaign critical as Holness administration seeks third term

Member of Parliament for Portland Western, Daryl Vaz, says grassroots campaigning will be critical, as Prime Minister Andrew Holness works to secure a third term.

The long-time MP, who reflected on how he strategically halted the People's National Party's 18-year dominance in Portland Western, urged the Prime Minister not to be sidetracked by the tactics used by the opposition People's National Party.

Mr. Vaz said the country's growth under Prime Minister Holness is the best on record, but added that the party leader must take his campaign into communities.

"Prime Minister, you are a man of faith. And therefore, do what you have to do to protect yourself from the wicked, badmind people. But stay strong in your faith and stay focused on your aim and objective. Put on your Clarks and come out of your office. Give the responsibilities to whoever you want to give and touch the road because Mark Golding can't match you, if you touch the road," he charged.

For his part, Mr. Vaz said he has proven himself as a politician and strategist, adding that he and his wife Ann-Marie Vaz - who is MP for Portland Eastern - have done the work.

Alluding to news that attorney-at-law Isat Buchanan is the new PNP standard-bearer in East Portland, Mr. Vaz declared "Who waan come, come!"

Mr. Vaz said the opposition is bereft of ideas to lead the country, adding that a PNP government will undo years of development by the Andrew Holness administration.

He was addressing party faithful at a JLP South East St. Catherine/Area Council 2 meeting at HEART Academy in Portmore, St. Catherine on Sunday.
