The polls have closed and electors in St. Ann North Eastern are now waiting to hear who will represent them in Gordon House following Monday's by-election.

Voters had the chance to mark their ballots during the period 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the Jamaica Labour Party's Matthew Samuda, Independent Candidate David Anderson, who has past ties to the People's National Party, and Chase Neil of the United Independents' Congress.

The People's National Party did not participate.

The by-election was triggered after the JLP's Marsha Smith resigned as Member of Parliament earlier this month.

The preliminary counting of ballots is underway.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica says voter turnout for the St. Ann North Eastern by-election was 9.4 per cent at 3 p.m.

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown, who spoke with Radio Jamaica News, said the figure represents a poor showing by electors.

"[It was] low relative to what our expectation would be.... Normally, it would have been more competitive," he noted.

The EOJ said the turnout for the comparative period in the September 3, 2020 General Election was 28.81 per cent.

However, Mr. Brown said the voting process was smooth, adding that no major incident was reported.

As of May 31, there were 43,827 registered voters in North East St. Ann.
