Employees of the Vocational Training Development Institute (VTDI) and the National Council on Technical & Vocational Education & Training (NCTVET) were this morning transitioned to the Ministry of Education.
The workers had been in limbo since 2018 following HEART/NSTA Trust's merger with the Jamaican Foundation for Lifelong Learning, National Youth Service and the Apprenticeship Board.
Clayton Hall, Deputy Secretary General for the Jamaica Teachers' Association, which represents workers at VTDI, says employees were notified via a letter that their positions would be made redundant and transitioned to the Education Ministry.
"That transition was in fact expected because the employees would have been in receipt of a letter for employment that they would have signed and returned, and the date of August 2 was in fact in those letters. So we are expecting that the transition will take some time. I really was not expecting it to be up and running as at day one," he admitted.
Mr. Hall said all VTDI employees have been offered positions, but some are not pleased with the placements.
"We still have some some concerns about where they were transitioned, the point at which they were transmission and...Education [Ministry] has in fact indicated that they are looking into the matter. So at this point there is really no cause for alarm," he conceded.
Mr. Hall said discussions are still ongoing to have the reclassification exercise implemented at HEART/NSTA Trust, extended to VDTI and NCTVET employees.
