The White House says press secretary Katie Zacharia is leaving the role just days after taking up the position.
The announcement came shortly after US President Donald Trump said he had asked Zacharia to "reconsider" her role.
Trump told reporters that Zacharia had been treated very badly by the media in recent days.
Zacharia held just one press briefing since taking up the position, which reports say ended abruptly after 14 minutes.
Her departure comes amid what has been described as a rocky start in the role.
