Prime Minister of St Vincent & the Grenadines Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has held talks with Venezuela's President, Nicolas Maduro, as tensions rise between Guyana and Venezuela over the Essequibo region.
Dr Gonsalves spoke with President of Guyana Dr. Irfaan Ali on Monday, urging calm and restraint and for both parties to return to diplomacy
He also cautioned that an escalation into open conflict could devastate the economies of both nations as well as socially, and destabilize the entire Latin America and Caribbean region, potentially resulting in a humanitarian and refugee crisis.
He advised both parties to resolve the matter, so it does not lead to any open conflict.
Both Venezuela and Guyana signed the Argyle Declaration in December 2023 to ease tensions between the two countries after Venezuela moved to claim more than a third of Guyana's land mass.
The leaders had then reiterated their commitment to Latin America and the Caribbean remaining a Zone of Peace.
