Grenada weighs pros and cons of casino gambling

Another Caribbean country is trying to thrash out the ethics of getting involved in the controversial casino gaming industry.

While St. Lucia and Jamaica seem set to get involved in the industry, Grenadians are apparently not yet decided which course to take.

While making the decision at the Cabinet level for or against casinos is certainly more complex than whether to place a bet on a roulette table, it does have an almost similar emotional impact.

Grenada's Prime Minister Tilman Thomas says he will not sit in a Cabinet that disregards the will of the people voicing his strongest opposition yet to the introduction of casino gambling on the island.

"Cabinet is run by consensus. At the same time the Cabinet ought to be sensitive and reflect the values and aims and aspirations of the people. Cabinet in the past has deceived the people but I would never be part of a Cabinet that seeks to deceive the people of the country," Mr. Thomas said.

In Grenada there has been much debate on the proposal of Swiss developers Zublem to include two casinos as part of a tourism development project.

They say it is a crucial part of the $150 million investment. Last month the government set up a commission to look at the issue.

There is much speculation about the views within the government on the matter, on what the Prime Minister will do and the political implications if the commission reports back in favour of the casinos.
