The Association of Haitian Journalists (AJH) is requesting a meeting with the Central Director of the Judicial Police (DCPJ), in the wake of allegations that some journalists have links to criminal gangs.
In a letter, Jacques Desrosiers, AJH Secretary General, while commending the DCPJ, noted that, as part of the actions of the DCPJ, press workers are arrested. Others have been identified in a document dated July 15, 2024 and attributed to the Criminal Affairs Bureau of the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police.
The AJH, says its mission is to ensure respect for freedom of the press and ethical and disciplinary rules governing the exercise of the profession of journalism.
The Secretary General said the approach of the AJH does not include efforts to influence or interfere in the work of the DPCJ but "will allow the AJH to gather elements for an objective assessment of the situation of these press workers."
