Royal Caribbean Cruises suffers fallout

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, says it is starting to see a fallout in bookings on its ships, as holidayers show nervousness in the wake of last month's cruise ship accident in Italy.

The indication from Royal Caribbean is that even though the ship which sank was from its rival Carnival Cruises, a chain reaction is being felt across the cruise shipping industry.

Royal Caribbean Cruises says new reservations for cruises have been hurt by the Costa Concordia tragedy and are down by the low- to mid-teen percentages from North America.

That's the market from which most of Jamaica's cruise passengers  hail.

But CEO of Caribbean Cruise Shipping and Tours, Dr Lee Bailey says he is not yet overly worried by the dip.

The company which is a partner in the Falmouth cruise pier said a drop in new bookings is most significant in the first three quarters of 2012, but tapers off later in the year.

Overall Royal Caribbean says the fallout could push earnings for the first quarter to 20-60 percent lower than original expectations.

However Dr Lee says it won't be because of any significant dip in bookings to Jamaica.
