Dominica grappling with significant illegal arms, ammo importation

Dominica has vowed to dismantle a gun running syndicate operating in the country as it continues to grapple with this security threat.

The authorities say 42 firearms, including assault rifles, and 220 rounds of ammunition have been intercepted at ports across the island since the start of the year.

Additionally, seven firearms and 69 rounds of ammunition have been seized from suspected criminals during the same period.

The police high command says, aside from the firearms seized so far, investigators are engaged in an investigation of the importation of a large quantity of firearms and ammunition into Dominica.

The National Security Minister says the authorities have engaged regional and international law enforcement partners in the fight against illegal weapons.
