Shortage of priests in the Caribbean

Attracting priests from the Caribbean to the Roman Catholic Church is becoming increasingly difficult.

Bishop of St John’s-Basseterre Kenneth Richards reportedly  told the Antigua Observer  that  church scandals and the influence of western culture have led to a shortage of Roman Catholic priests in the Caribbean.

Richards said one obstacle faced is that the church face is that ” parents do not have the generosity of spirit to allow their children to make such choice and then of course the scandals have not helped”.

The majority of priests serving in the subregion come from Africa and some parts of Europe

The bishop said one of his aims is to get more young men to take up positions as priests.

Roman Catholic priests are required to take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Experts believe these are some of the factors that discourage young men from the vocation.
