Special voting progresses smoothly in Trinidad

Police officers, Election Day workers and offshore employees in Trinidad and Tobago, Tuesday started to cast their votes ahead of the November 5 General Election.

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) says "special voting" will continue until November 4.

The "special voting" is held for only six hours.

According to an EBC official, Tuesday's exercise progressed smoothly.

The final list of special voters has not been made public, but in the 2002 General Election there were over 14,000 voters who cast ballots in the 36 constituencies.

But this year's General Election will be for 41 seats in the House of Assembly.

Three political parties, the ruling People's National Movement (PNM), the main opposition United National Congress (UNC) and the minority Congress of the People (COP), are contesting the November 5 polls.

Close to one million persons are eligible to vote in the General Election.

There are 130 candidates including five independents.
