United States
authorities say the Coast Guard has repatriated 100 Haitian migrants after they
were spotted in an overloaded vessel northeast of Cuba.
While on a routine patrol of the Caribbean Sea last Friday, the Coast Guard said crew members detected on radar the 25-foot sail freighter with the Haitians on board.
The Coast Guard said the Haitians were returned to Cap-Haitien on Tuesday.
The agency said it has increased its patrol of the Caribbean during the winter season because strong winds and unusually very large waves can make it more dangerous for those trying to reach the United States.
Since the beginning of the year, the Coast Guard said it has repatriated 259 Haitians.
