The Belize government says it has been working very closely with the United States authorities, after Washington earlier this week named it and three other CARICOM states among those designated as major drug transit or major illicit drug producing countries for the fiscal year 2025.
Prime Minister John Briceño says since coming to office in October 2020, the number of planes with drugs that have landed in Belize has decreased dramatically.
The other countries on the list are Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Haiti.
The US said a country's presence on the list is not necessarily a reflection of its government's counterdrug efforts or level of cooperation with it and that the list is not a sanction or penalty.
