52 yr old Merlene Ottey for European Championships

Among the entries for  the European Athletics Championships is Slovenian sprinter Merlene Ottey.

Ottey, now 52, was included in Slovenia's squad for the women's 4x100m relay.

She ran a season's best of 11.82 to finish third at the Slovenian Cup meeting in Maribor.

If she makes an appearance in the event's heats today Saturday 30 June, she will be the oldest person to compete in the European Athletics Championships, beating her own record set two years ago in Barcelona when she anchored the Slovenian quartet

Its not yet known if she will be asked to don her spikes  as she is only the fifth fastest member of their squad.

Merlene Ottey began her career representing Jamaica, but since 2002, has represented Slovenia where she now lives.

She is ranked fourth on the all-time list over 60m (indoor), sixth on the all-time list over 100m and third on the all-time list over 200m.

Ottey has had the longest career as a top level international sprinter.
