Azarenaka beats Stosur in tough match

Defending champion Samantha Stosur of Australia has had her run at the US Open ended at the quarter-final stage by World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in one of the toughest match 6-1, 4-6, 7-6.

The 23-year-old top seed opening set proved to be a difficult one for the Stosur, who struggled to hold any of her service games.

However,  Stosur responded well during the second set. Both players found it hard to find any consistency while serving, but it was the Australian who eventually came out on top 6-4.

The reigning Australian Open champion ensured that she will remain atop the world rankings no matter what happens the rest of the way in the year's final Grand Slam tournament on the Flushing Meadows hard courts.

The Belarusian will face next face either 11th seed Marion Bartoli of France or Russian third seed Maria Sharapova, who completed a career Grand Slam by winning this year's French Open.

Wednesday's scheduled quarterfinals will send Serena Williams, a 14-time Grand Slam champion, against Serbian 12th seed Ana Ivanovic and Italian 10th seed Sera Frrani against 20th-seeded compatriot Roberta Vinci.
