Barbados Tridents take CPL 2014 title

Barbados Tridents emerged victorious in the 2nd edition of the Caribbean Premier League T20 cricket championship on Saturday, defeating Guyana Amazon Warriors.

The method of deciding the outcome was the unsatisfactory Duckworth-Lewis system, due to rain interruptions.

Scores: Barbados Tridents 152, Guyana Amazon Warriors 107/4 (losing by by eight runs under the D/L method)

Tridents were struggling at 8/2 after being put in to bat. Krishmar Santokie struck in his first two overs, dismissing William Perkins in the first and then bowling Jason Holder for a duck. That was followed by an 88-run third-wicket partnership between Dwayne Smith and Shoaib Malik.

There was a second rain interruption at that point, and upon the resumption, Sunil Narine gave the supporters of Amazon Warriors something to smile about when he got rid of Smith and Kieron Pollard in successive deliveries to leave Tridents on 96 for 4.

Malik grasped the responsibility of taking his team to a competitive total thereafter and, unde the circumstances, the Tridents would not have been unhappy with 152, of which Malik made an unbeaten 55 off 42 balls.

Bad start

Amazon Warriors got off to a bad start, with Martin Guptill going, bowled Kyle Mayers for 7, with the score at only 12.

A 37-run partnership between Simmons and Mohammed Hafeez followed but when Simmons, the tournament's highest run-getter, was dismissed for 20, the writing was on the wall.

Things became even more difficult when Hafeez and Jimmy Neesham were both were dismissed in the same over to leave Amazon Warriors with 77 to get off 42 balls.

In the end, however, it was the rain that played the decisive hand in the outcome, leaving Amazon Warriors, finalists in the first edition of the CPL as well, deeply disappointed at falling at the last hurdle once again.
