It was a mixed day for CONCACAF teams at the World Cup on Sunday as Costa Rica beat Japan to get a lifeline, but Canada were sent packing after losing to Croatia.

Costa Rica, who lost 7-0 to Spain on Wednesday and were expected to be the whipping boys of the group, pulled off a coup with Keysher Fuller's 81st minute goal giving them a shock 1-0 win over Japan who made five changes to the team that beat Germany.

Costa Rica are now in with a shout to advance from the group as they must avoid defeat, at least, against the Germans.

The other CONCACAF team in action on the day, Canada, were not so lucky as they were eliminated by Croatia after a 4-1 loss.

Alphonso Davies scored Canada's first ever World Cup goal and the fastest so far at this year’s tournament with his strike coming after just 67 seconds.

Former champions Germany dodged a bullet as they salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw against Spain.

Meanwhile, Belgium could find themselves in danger of not leaving their group after a 2-0 defeat to Morocco.

Abdel Hamid Sabiri and Zakaria Aboukhlal were the scorers as Morocco go to second on 4 points, one ahead of Belgium.

Action continues on Monday with Cameroon facing Serbia at 5:00 am; South Korea battling Ghana at 8:00; Brazil opposing Switzerland at 11:00 and Portugal facing Uruguay at 2:00 pm.
