Jamaican sprint superstar Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce says she was disappointed by the IOC's decision to postpone the Tokyo Olympics but says she understands why it was done. The 33 year old who won her fourth World Championships title in 2019, was looking to compete in her final Games this summer, after winning 6 Olympic medals including gold in the 100 metres in 2008 and 2012.
However, the IOC and the Tokyo organizers pushed back the event to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking on her instagram live on Wednesday, Fraser-Pryce said it was a difficult pill to swallow.
“I was disappointed because coming from a World Championships you’re physically and mentally preparing to do your thing. I really wanted to have the Olympics this year and then go to the 2021 World Championships in Eugene. I am 33 now so you don’t want to stay around for too long,” she said.
However, Fraser-Pryce says she is still determined to compete and add to her illustrious medal collection. At her last Olympic Games in Rio 2016, Fraser-Pryce won bronze in the 100 metres behind compatriot Elaine Thompson and silver in the 4x100 metres relay.
