1000 Guineas heroine Disability Charm from the stables of Patrick "Wacky" Lynch and 2000 Guineas winner Commander Two who is trained by Patrick Taylor, headline what is expected to be the maximum field of 16 for the 98th running of the Boom Jamaica derby for native bred 3 year old fillies, colts and geldings over 12 furlongs on June 30 at Caymanas Park.
Apprentice Javaniel Patterson has been confirmed as the jockey for Commander Two. Another top contender will be Wayne DaCosta's Drummer Boy who won the recent Lotto Classic in gate to wire fashion and will once again be ridden by veteran jockey Gary Richards.
Another dangerous contender should be the champion 2 year old from last season Marquesas from the barn of Michael Marlowe. Marquesas has failed to land any of the major prep races this year but his trainer is optimistic about an improved effort come June 30.
Meanwhile, Marvin Campbell is the only conditioner from the recent batch of 22 trainers that is expected to have a runner in the Derby. He's slated to send out Royal Aviator who warmed up with a victory going 9 furlongs and 25 yards on Saturday. The bay colt will once again be ridden by leading jockey Anthony Thomas.
The line-up is also expected to include Jamaica Oaks winner Fayrouz as well as Honey Ryda, Lici's Pepsi and El Professor. There are 38 early entries for the event that will carry total purse money of JA$8-million. The top 16 will be delected based on lifetime earnings. The official launch took place at Caymanas Park on Tuesday.
The day will also feature the SVREL Juvenile Stakes; the SVREL Sprint Trophy and the Viceroy Trophy for Grade 1 horses over 9 furlongs.
