Jamaica's Andrew Bicknell wins in ITF Junior Tennis tourney

Home fans were given something to cheer by Andrew Bicknell, on an otherwise bleak start to ITF Junior Tennis tournament at the Eric Bell Centre in Kingston.

Bicknell withstood the challenge of France's Wilhelm Labrador to win 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 and reach the second round.

Andrew's brother, Blaise, was struggling against Mexican Edson Tovar, and was 4-nil down when he retired hurt.

Cliff Dwyer, another player to reach the draw was beaten 6-2, 6-3 by Dimitri Bird of the United States.

While no local female player made it through to the second round, a number of Americans with Jamaican parentage made progress. They include Najah Dawson, who beat Andrea Tudela 6-0, 6-0 and Brianna Tullough who beat Bahamian Candace Mortier 6-0, 6-1.

Selena Blythe and Shaeda Nickle who made it to the main draw lost their matches in straight sets.
