McLeod and Gayle win at Shanghai Diamond League

World and Olympic champion Omar McLeod and the ever improving Tajay Gayle were the Jamaican winners at the Shanghai Diamond League meet on Saturday, the second stop on the Diamond League calendar. McLeod won the men's sprint hurdles in a season's best 13.12 seconds, holding off Chinese Wenjun Xhie who was second in 13.17 and Sergey Shubenkov who finished third in 13.28.

Gayle continued his good form, leaping 8.24 metres to win the men's long jump. This follows up on his personal best 8.30 metres at the National Stadium two weeks ago. The other Jamaican in the event, Damar Forbes, failed to register a mark.

Another Olympic champion Elaine Thompson finished third in the women's 100 metres in 11.14 seconds. The race was won by American Aleia Hobbs in 11.03 with Blessing Okagbare second in 11.07.

World Championship bronze medallist Stephanie McPherson finished 4th in the women's 400 metres in a season's best 51.39 seconds as Salwa Eid Nasser of Bahrain won in 50.65.

In the men's event, Nathon Allen clocked a season's best 45.73 for 4th behind American winner Fred Kerley who crossed the line in a 44.81. Ackeem Bloomfield who was listed to contest the event didn't compete.

National 100 metres champion Tyquendo Tracey finished 9th in 10.19 seconds in a fast 100 metres which was won by American Noah Lyles in a world-leading and personal best 9.86 seconds. It was the same time as his American teammate Christian Coleman who finished second with Akani Simbine third in 9.95 in a race where the top 4 finishers all broke 10 seconds.

Earlier, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Danniel Thomas-Dodd was 5th in the women's shot put with a best throw of 18.54 metres.
