There has been a renewed call for an increase in the use of technology in local football. The cry comes after the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL) semi-final between Arnett Gardens and Cavalier on Sunday was interrupted by bottle throwing spectators. The fans were disgruntled by what they deemed incompetent officiating.
Former FIFA referee, Keeble Williams, whilst in support of the use of video assistant referee (VAR), does not think it will be implemented anytime soon locally.
With the cost of introducing VAR being prohibitive at this time, Williams suggested goal line technology as a more cost effective option to assist officials.
The Reggae Boyz are set to kick off their 2026 World Cup qualification on June 6 at the National Stadium, and Williams gave the assurance that VAR will be utilized.
