Rupert Green made a successful defence of the Negril Reggae Marathon title when he won the 10th staging on Saturday morning in wet conditions.
Green stopped the clock in two hours 30 minutes and 27 seconds to finish nine minutes four seconds ahead of Gregory McKenzie.
Green says he was disappointed with the time posted for victory.
“I had to push the entire race on my own, no competition at all, it is pretty difficult to be out there and to be challenging yourself and to make matters worse I had a few cramps in my hamstring so I had to slow down for the latter part of the race. It kind of took away from my time but I am happy,” Green said.
The female equivalent went to Elizabeth Mondon in two hours 50 minutes and 55 seconds.
Mondon says she revised her strategy after finishing second last year.
“I actually made sure I didn’t start too fast. Last year I started with the 10k pace and I paid the price on mile 17 so I made sure I started with a lower pace this year,” Mondon said.
Sean Pitter won the men's 10k in 31 minutes 56 seconds ahead of Kevin Campbell while Carrie Tollefson of the USA won the female event in 35 minutes and 5 seconds.
Fourteen-year-old Shana-Kay South was second.
Kirk Brown also of Seek Club defended the men's half marathon title in one hour 10 minutes and 57 seconds while Sashana Williams of GC Foster College won the women's equivalent in one hour 29 minutes and 8 seconds.
