Serena Williams beats Victoria Azarenka at WTA Championships

The No.3 ranked Serena Williams of the United States continued to make a mockery of the WTA rankings today, hammering world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus into the ground like a rail spike despite having very little to gain in the short term, save for her perfect record against Top 5 players this year at the WTA Championships.

Williams is now 12-0 against that august if not entirely adequate company.

Williams won, 6-4, 6-4, even though she spaced out after winning the first set and allowed Azarenka a two-break, 3-0 lead to start the second set.

Despite the loss, Azerenka can secure the No. 1 position with another victory in the round-robin tournament, which features the top eight players.

The American led the head to head between the duo 10-1 before Thursday's match and came back from 3-0 down in the second set to secure her 11th win.

The last time these two women met was in the U.S. Open final, in which Williams won beat Azarenka.

Sharapova, the French Open champion, could still take the No. 1 ranking away from Azarenka.

Williams has dominated the second part of the season, winning Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and Olympic gold in London. She's won 46 of her last 48 matches, but because of injuries and missed tournaments, cannot attain the top ranking.
