The 2-1 favourite She’s A Maneater triumphed in the 97th running of the Boom Jamaica Derby over 12 furlongs at Caymanas Park on Saturday. The bay filly underlined her status as the top 3 year native bred horse in the country with a battling come-from-behind performance in the blue ribband event on the local racing calendar.
Jamaica Oaks winner Marlene My Love under replacement rider Robert Halledeen, created a huge scare by leading for a mighty long way before she was reeled in by She’s A Maneater in deep stretch.
She’s A Maneater completed the trip in the joint fastest time ever for the Derby, clocking 2:32.4 to join Royal Dad in 1981 and Hello Poochie Loo in 1983 and is now in line to secure the Triple Crown entering next month's Jamaica St Leger. She provided jockey Omar Walker with his second Derby success and trainer Wayne DaCosta with his sixth.
Sotomayor, Marlene My Love and Market Force completed the frame.
