UWI establishes new faculty

The University of the West Indies Mona Campus is now home to a Faculty of Sport, the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean. The official launch took place at the UWI headquarters on Wednesday.

Plans to establish a new regional faculty at the University of the West Indies were announced as early as April 2016 and those plans became a reality less than a year and half later.

It will consolidate and expand current programmes at all four campuses of the university, Mona, St Augustine, Cave Hill and the Open Campus.

The new faculty will have programmes ranging from a Certificate of Physical Education at the Open Campus; a Certificate in the Art and Science of Coaching at St Augustine; a Bachelor's and Masters Degrees in Sports Sciences at Cave Hill and Masters Degrees in Sports Medicine and Sports Business Management at the Mona Campus.

Well known Sports Medicine physician and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Akshai Mansingh has been appointed Dean of the new faculty. The new faculty of sport will offer a total of 10 courses in the first instance.
