Exotic clubs in New York sue state for not being able to resume business

A number of exotic clubs in New York City have sued the state for what they say is unfair treatment, as they have been kept closed while most venues including bars with live music and casinos remain open.

The lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court claims that thousands of employees have been forced out of work by the state's ban because of the coronavirus.

Defendants include Governor Andrew Cuomo and the state's liquor licensing authority.

The clubs have asked the court to declare it a violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments to keep them closed while allowing other enclosed establishments to open.

The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, maintains that they have been ready to open with COVID-19 safety protocols since the early days of the pandemic.

They pledged to require masks and temperature checks for guests and employees, to keep everyone safely apart and to engage in frequent cleanings of all surfaces with ample supplies of disinfectant throughout the clubs.
