Rihanna designated National Hero of Barbados

Prime Minister Mia Mottley

Barbados has declared hit singer and entrepreneur Rihanna a National Hero.

The designation was on Monday night as the country made its transition to republican status.

Thirty-three year-old Rihanna, who had flown in for the celebrations in her hometown of Bridgetown, was invited on stage by Prime Minister Mia Mottley who made the surprise announcement to loud cheers from the appreciative audience.

Rihanna, named Robyn Rihanna Fenty at birth in 1988, appeared very moved in the moment, touching her heart as she was lauded by the Prime Minister, who incorporated the singer’s own lyrics as she said: “May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation by your words, by your actions and to do credit wherever you shall go.”

Jamaica

Unlike Jamaica, which has so far designated only freedom fighters and significant political figures National Hero, Barbados has also included cultural and sports icons.

For decades Jamaicans have been lobbying for reggae icon Bob Marley and folklorist Louise Bennett Coverly (Miss Lou) to be added to be given that designation.
