UNICEF and PAHO/WHO welcome Cabinet's approval of National School Nutrition Policy and Standards

International partner agencies on health and education have welcomed Cabinet's approval of the National School Nutrition Policy and Standards.

The announcement on the policy was made on Wednesday at the post Cabinet media briefing.

Information Minister Dr Dana Morris-Dixon said it will soon be tabled as a White Paper in the House of Representatives.

In a joint statement, following that announcement, UNICEF and PAHO/WHO said this "monumental step" represents a tangible commitment to the health and well-being of Jamaica's children and adolescents.

The agencies say they eagerly anticipate the further tabling and approval of the policy by Parliament, followed by its implementation.

They add that complementary policies, such as octagonal front-of-package warning labels, will support school administrators, parents, and students in identifying healthier foods for sale and consumption in schools.

The agencies have committed to supporting the Government and other stakeholders in implementing evidence-based policies that support health and nutrition to have a positive impact on the health and well-being of all Jamaicans.
