Record number of Americans quitting jobs

The number of Americans voluntarily quitting their jobs surged to a record high in August and there were more than 10 million vacancies, pointing to a tightening labour market that could help to keep inflation high as companies raise wages to lure workers.
According to the US Labor department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, employment vacancies fell to 10.44 million during the month, a drop of 659,000 from July's upwardly revised 11.1 million.
However, the number of persons to quit hit a new series high going back to December 2000, as 4.3 million workers left their jobs.
Quits are seen as a level of confidence from workers who feel they are secure in finding employment elsewhere.
