US probing Exxon contractor in Guyana for smuggling drugs, gold

US government officials are reportedly investigating two mining magnates in Guyana, on suspicions of money laundering, drug trafficking and gold smuggling.

Reuters says it has spoken to five people with knowledge of the matter and seen two intelligence reports.

According to the news agency, Texas based oil giant, Exxon Mobil contracted the two Guyanese to construct a shore base in Guyana for its massive offshore oil operation.

According to four of the sources and two additional people familiar with the matter, US officials are considering imposing sanctions on the two men.

That could require Exxon to sever its business relationship with any sanctioned individuals or companies.

The men deny any wrongdoing.
