Almost a third of Jamaicans want Bob Marley or 'Miss Lou' to be named national heroes - RJRGLEANER poll

Almost a third Jamaicans are in favour of Bob Marley or Louise Bennett Coverley, popularly known as 'Miss Lou', being named national heroes.

The findings were revealed in the latest RJRGLEANER Don Anderson poll.

In December 2021, Opposition Senator Floyd Morris had moved a motion for Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Louise Bennett Coverley and Usain Bolt to be given the highest honour in Jamaica for their outstanding contribution to music, culture and sports.

Months later, in April this year, Member of Parliament for South East St. Ann, Lisa Hanna, moved a resolution calling for reggae icon Bob Marley to be named a national hero.

In moving the resolution in the House of Representatives, Miss Hanna noted the global impact of Marley's music.

She pointed out that One Love was named the song of the millennium and his messages have spurred movements for revolutionary social change to improve conditions for the disenfranchised and black people.

Pollster Don Anderson posed the question of potential national heroes in a poll conducted among 1,113 Jamaicans across the island from July 16 to 26.

The poll found that 29 per cent of Jamaicans were in support of Marley being named a national hero.

The same percentage of people thought Louise Bennett Coverley should be given that honour.

Another nine per cent of Jamaicans singled out track star Usain Bolt for the national honour.

One per cent of people nominated both Marley and 'Miss Lou' for hero status.

Another one per cent mentioned sprint queen Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce.

But Mr. Anderson said 27 per cent of those interviewed said they could not think of any new candidate to be named national hero.

Under the National Heroes and Awards Act, the Order of National Hero is presented by the Governor General on the advice of the Prime Minister.

An advisory committee is also required for the Order of National Hero.

The committee can determine whether persons - living or dead - should get the title.

The Act describes a national hero as someone who was born in Jamaica or a citizen who has rendered to the country "service of the most distinguished nature".

The BBC proclaimed Bob Marley's song One Love as the 'Song of the Millennium' in 1999.

He was also given the United Nation's Peace Medal of the Third World.

'Miss Lou' has been recognised for her contribution to arts, culture and the appreciation of Jamaican creole.

Her poetry is widely recognised, and she has received several honourary doctorates.

Jamaica currently has six heroes and one heroine.
