Colin Gager, Chairman of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation
The Trelawny Municipal Corporation will be cracking down on illegal vending and dumping in the town of Falmouth.
The municipal corporation on Wednesday hosted a town hall to update residents on the challenges and efforts that will be made to fix them.
Colin Gager, chairman of the corporation, said the state of affairs has significantly deteriorated which could negatively affect tourism.
In a subsequent interview with Radio Jamaica News, Mr. Gager said there is also a health concern due to illegal vending, which has taken over the town.
He pointed to unsanitary conditions in which "a person will be selling [food] but all sorts of termites exist within their surrounding".
Additionally, he said some vendors are stealing electricity.
Mr. Gager noted that the municipal corporation also had to remove vending stalls that were donated by the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) because they were reconstructed and used as living quarters.
The chairman said he fears that if the municipal corporation does not act, there will be a further breakdown in law and order.
The corporation will be carrying out an operation "in a civil manner", he said, adding that it will serve notice to those in breach and take them to court if they do not comply.
Mr. Gager explained that "the last thing" the corporation wanted to do was take vendors' goods. So, he called for them to operate within the market district so that Falmouth can become "one of the best running towns".
