Cops in Horizon Park attack among recipients of national honours

The four police officers who were shot in the deadly Horizon Park attack in Spanish Town in June, are among this year's recipients of national honours to be presented on Heroes' Day.  
 
The three police officers who died after being shot during the June 12 operation in St. Catherine will be the recipients of the Medal of Honour for Gallantry.
 
A fourth officer, who was shot and injured, will also be awarded the medal.
 
The search for wanted men with high powered weapons turned tragic when Detective Corporal Dane Biggs, Constable Decardo Hylton and Superintendent Leon Clunis received fatal wounds.
 
Superintendent Clunis died in hospital, almost three weeks after the incident.
 
District Constable Lothan Richards is recuperating from his injuries.
 
 
Order of Merit 
 
Jamaica's fourth highest honour, the Order of Merit will be bestowed upon Professor Orlando Patterson, who heads the list of 130 recipients for this year's National Honours and Awards to be presented on National Heroes Day on October 19.
 
Mr. Patterson is being recognised for his highly distinguished contribution to areas including academia and West Indian Literature.
 
 
Order of Jamaica 
 
Education Minister Karl Samuda is to receive the Order of Jamaica.
 
He will be joined by senate president Tom Tavares Finson, former Bank of Jamaica Governor Brian Wynter, Olympian Merlene Ottey and NCB Group president and CEO Patrick Hylton.
 
 
Order of Distinction (Commander Class)
 
Former Labour Minister Shahine Robinson, who died on May 29, will be awarded the Order of Distinction in the Rank of Commander.
 
Other awardees in this category include, Olympian Deon Hemmings, businessmen Keith Duncan and Metry Seaga, philantrophist Cedella Marley, politician Anthony Hylton and general manager of the Gleaner Garfield Grandison.
 
 
Order of Distinction (Officer Class)
 
Multiple Festival Song winner, Eric Donaldson and Sir David Rodigan will be recognised for their contribution to the local music industry and the promotion of Jamaican music respectively.
 
They will receive the Order of Distinction in the Rank of Officer.
 
This award will also go to sign language interpreter Antoinette Aiken, the late former mayor of May Pen, Milton Brown, former broadcaster at Radio Jamaica Henry Stennett, Pat Lazarus and Barbara Ellington as well as Saint International CEO Deiwght Peters.
 
Other persons will also be awarded the Badge of Honour for Gallantry, Meritorious Service and Long and Faithful Service.
