Health Minister Ruddy Spencer has announced that a new medical ward is being developed in a bid to increase the bed capacity at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
The new ward will accommodate 40 beds.
Mr. Spencer, who was speaking at the hospital, said the Ministry has already identified the space for the new medical ward.
The new ward will house both male and female patients, and will reduce the time it takes for patients to be admitted.
The proposal for funding is presently being developed.
In the meantime, the Ministry has entered into a contract with IGL to pipe the Cornwall Regional Hospital for oxygen and medical gases.
Mr. Spencer said the project is set to begin on Monday.
He said gases will now be delivered more efficiently, and the overall cost for medical gases will be less.
