Member of Parliament for St. Catherine Eastern Denise Daley says there needs to be more long term and consistent interventions for young people in Jamaica.
Ms Daley says a number of youngsters are interested in the arts and sports, and if kept fully engaged, fewer would be involved in crime.
She was commenting on last week's disclosure by Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson that a recent review of the crime data showed that children 15 to 17 years old have been committing hundreds of major crimes since 2019.
Speaking at a Lauriston and Thompson Pen community 4-H club event in Spanish Town on the weekend, Ms Daley called for research into the root causes of young people becoming involved in crime.
She also suggested that youths need to be consistently engaged in activities "not just as a little hobby" but that can be turned into a profession.
She said young people are discouraged by promises not kept and so she will be making a greater effort to ensure programmes in her constituency are implemented and maintained.
In Central Village and Spanish Town, for instance, the MP said there are many talented youngsters whose skills need to be harvested. She said her constituency will invest heavily in sports, especially football, cricket and netball.
