Opposition Spokesperson on Health Dr. Alfred Dawes is raising questions over the $31 million spent to purchase a single neuro drill by the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA).

Dr. Dawes says the amount paid is double the reasonable cost, adding that there can be no justification for the spend.

Describing it as a reckless spend, Dr. Dawes says it points to a broken health system.

"I met with SERHA's leadership and their answers were alarming. Doctors were forced to choose between a $30 million drill or a $50 million drill, neither a fair price. The procurement process failed them. No competitive bids and transparency, no proof this wasn't Jamaica's best option. This is not just waste; it is either gross incompetence or highly technical corruption," he argued.

He has called for the resignation of the chairman of SERHA.

"Operating theatres are shuttered. ICU beds vanish. Surgeries proceed at KPH despite mould risks. This is a betrayal of patients and staff. I call for Wentworth Charles' immediate resignation," he said. "Jamaica deserves leaders who prioritise health. Our hospitals need repairs, not overpriced equipment."
