The Ministry of Education is expressing sorrow over the tragic stabbing death of a Grade 7 student from Denham Town High School on Tuesday.

Omar Collie was fatally stabbed while on his way home from school.

A 14-year-old female student has been taken into custody in relation to the incident.

Senior Superintendent Michael Phipps, head of the Kingston Western Police Division, told Radio Jamaica News that the students got into an altercation along West Queen Street about 3:20 p.m.

Additionally, the Ministry says it is deeply concerned about an incident at Oberlin High School, St. Andrew West Rural, where a female student was attacked by another female student at the entrance of the school, also on Tuesday.

The injured student suffered multiple facial injuries and is receiving medical care.

Education Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon says the incidents are tragic and alarming, adding that violence has no place in schools.

She says the Ministry's Region One office has dispatched a specialised team to provide grief counselling and psychological support to the affected students, staff and families at Denham Town and Oberlin high schools.

While the Ministry awaits the official reports to ascertain further details on the incidents, Dr. Morris Dixon has committed to completing the review of the School Safety Policy.

In the meantime, the Ministry says it will continue to review and strengthen measures aimed at fostering safe and peaceful school environments for all students and staff.
