Education Ministry not ruling out having students repeat last academic year

Fayval Williams

Education Minister Fayval Williams has said her ministry is not ruling out the possibility of students repeating the 2020/2021 academic year due to learning loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mrs Williams said the ministry will be able to make a decision based on the assessment of students.

"As students come back to school, as we do assessment tests and so on, we will know where students are, and if there is a requirement then that is what will happen. But there has been no policy so far or no broad-based decision about that just yet," she revealed.

Linvern Wright, President of the Jamaica Association of Principals of Secondary Schools, has suggested that students repeat the year because of significant learning loss due to the disruption caused by the pandemic.

Darien Henry, Principal of Cumberland High School, has also joined the call, noting that many students have not been engaged since September.
