Eight Guyanese legislators suspended for disrupting House sitting last year

The Guyana Parliament has suspended eight opposition legislators for their role in the disruption of the House on December 29 last year, resulting in the seizure of the Speaker's Mace.

The move came even as members of the opposition coalition A Partnership for National Unity and the Alliance for Change described as unconstitutional, the report from the Parliamentary Committee of Privileges that recommended their suspension.

The legislators had taken the matter to the High Court and were awaiting a ruling in a bid to block consideration of the Privileges Committee Report.

But Attorney General Anil Nandlall said the work of the National Assembly was protected by the separation of powers including the discipline and conduct of  the Parliament.

The incident in the National Assembly last year occurred during debate of the Natural Resource Fund Act.
