Dunstan Bryan, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, has said there are sufficient doctors and nurses to care for COVID-19 patients.

The Jamaica Medical Doctors Association told Radio Jamaica News that some of its members are struggling to keep up with the increased patient load amid the latest surge in COVID-19 cases.

More doctors were rehired by the government following the non-renewal of  their contracts last month.

However, Mr. Bryan says there is no need to hire more staff at this juncture.

"We ramped up by at least an additional 75 nurses and doctors in March and those contracts are still in place to this time because those contracts were six months.... And so the staff complement that managed the surge in March are still in place to begin the process of managing whatever eventuality rises out of this experience that we're going to go through," the permanent secretary revealed.

Mr. Bryan was speaking on the Morning Agenda on Power 106 with host Sanjay Lewis.
