Everard Warmington, Member of Parliament for St. Catherine South Western, was sworn in as Minister of State without portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister Wednesday morning.
Information Minister Senator Ruel Reid, made the announcement at the post cabinet press briefing Wednesday.
It is understood that the swearing in was held without any invitation to mainstream media or notification to the public.
Mr. Warmington is the only State Minster in the OPM where there are three full ministers without portfolio. They are ministers Daryl Vaz, Horace Chang and Derrick Smith.
Under the OPM are the ministries of Economic Growth & Job Creation, Works, Water and Housing as well as Defence, which is handled by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
A news release from the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Wednesday afternoon said Mr. Warmington will have responsibility for Works.
At this morning's post Cabinet media briefing Information Minister Senator Ruel Reid was initially unaware of Mr. Warmington's appointment but was informed moments later while the media briefing was still in progress.
Meanwhile, the JIS release said, in his address at the swearing-in ceremony Prime Minister Andrew Holness, expressed confidence that Mr. Warmington will serve the country with distinction.
The Prime Minister said based on his interactions with Mr. Warmington, he could be described as a hard and dedicated worker.
Speaking to JIS News after the ceremony, Mr. Warmington pledged to work diligently to fulfil his responsibilities.
Mr. Warmington is the fifth Minister of State to be sworn in under the Andrew Holness administration.
