Falmouth Hospital damaged by angry residents

A section of Falmouth Hospital in Trelawny was damaged Sunday morning after it came under attack from relatives and friends of a man who died while undergoing treatment following a motor vehicle crash.

The glass door to the Acicdent and Emergency section was shattered by bottles and stones thrown by irate friends of the deceased.

Members of the hospital staff were forced to run for cover, but three of them were injured in the attack.

It's reported that, shortly after six o'clock, five victims of a motor vehicle crash were rushed to the hospital for treatment following the mishap along the Martha Brae main road.

They were returning from a party when the driver lost control of the vehicle which crashed into a tree. The driver, 34 year old Dwayne Faulkner, died while undergoing treatment, while the others were treated. One of them remains in serious condition.

But friends of the driver accused doctors and other hospital staff of failing to administer treatment to him in a timely manner, leading to his death. They became irate and began hurling bottles and stones at the hospital.

Members of the Trelanwy police were summoned to the institution to quell the disturbance.

In response, Kenneth Grant, Chairman of the Board of Management of Falmouth Hospital has condemned attack on the facility.

“We cannot, as Jamaicans… everything we turn to violence; we don’t believe in mediation and discussing matters and having (them) resolved,” he lamented.

He told RJR News that the hospital will be upgrading its security, as a matter of urgency, adding that he was confident that members of the medical team tried their best to save the life of the man who ultimately died.
