Lenworth Fulton, immediate past president of the Jamaica Agricultural Society, is urging the government to reconsider removing the General Consumption Tax from imported raw food items.
Debate in the House of Representatives on a measure to remove the GCT from imported raw food items was suspended on Tuesday.
Finance Minister Fayval Williams, who piloted amendments to the General Consumption Tax (Amendment of Schedule Order) 2025, told the House that the measure to remove the tax is in keeping with the rules of the World Trade Organization.
But Mr Fulton claims the current GCT on raw food item imports will not affect world trade.
He believes the removal will hurt Jamaica's farmers and is therefore calling for the government to meet with stakeholders in the agriculture sector prior to making certain decisions.
