Finance Minister Fayval Williams and Opposition Leader Mark Golding
Debate on a measure to remove the General Consumption Tax from imported raw food items was suspended Tuesday afternoon in the House of Representatives.
Finance Minister Fayval Williams, who piloted amendments to the General Consumption Tax Amendment of Schedule Order, 2025, moved for the suspension of the bill, to allow more time to respond to questions from the parliamentary opposition.
Prior to the suspension, Minister Williams told the House that the measure to remove the Tax was keeping with the rules of the World Trade Organisation.
But Opposition Leader Mark Golding warned that the removal of the GCT on the imported items, in the current climate of international trade wars, will affect local producers.
He suggested that Jamaica was pressured to remove the tax.
