Gov't to consider reapproaching Venezuela for oil

Daryl Vaz

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz has suggested the government is open to discussions on reapproaching Venezuela for the purchase of oil.

The relationship between Jamaica and Venezuela broke down in 2019 after Jamaica voted not to recognise the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's election win.

The Petrocaribe Agreement, under which Jamaica imported oil from the South American country, ended a year earlier.

However, the opposition has called for Jamaica to re-engage with Venezuela in light of the current energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.

Speaking in the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Vaz accepted the recommendation and committed that the government "will have a discussion at length about the matter".

In making that statement, Mr. Vaz also announced that the government was in talks with Nigeria as an alternative source of fuel.

The minister said the two countries finalised a Memorandum of Understanding on oil and gas cooperation at the Nigeria-Jamaica Joint Commission held in February, with the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources of Nigeria expressing its "willingness to sell LNG to Petrojam, once there is a capability of receiving same at Petrojam".
